Organized by Dick Hartman in the late 1920s, the Tennessee Ramblers transferred to Charlotte from Rochester, New York in 1934 under the sponsorship of Crazy Water Crystals. At that time, the band featured Hartman, Harry Blair, Kenneth Wolfe, Jack Gillette and native North Carolinian Cecil Campbell (2). The ensemble quickly established themselves as WBT’s most popular stringband, receiving over one hundred thousand pieces of fan mail by the end of their first seven months of broadcasting.
