Cindy McTee is from Tacoma, Washington, and holds degrees from Pacific Lutheran University (BM 1975), the Yale School of Music (MM 1978), and the University of Iowa (PhD 1981). She completed one year of study in Poland with Krzysztof Penderecki at the Academy of Music in Cracow (1974-75).

McTee taught at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and in 1984 joined the faculty of the University of North Texas, and was Regents Professor of Music Composition in 2004.
