Along with Charles Trenet, Hess formed the music-hall duo Charles & Johnny (1932-1936). Subsequently, Hess became a solo-artist and songwriter, working with lyricists including André Hornez, Maurice Vandair, and Jacques Larue. He continued to record through the 1940's, and performed and toured into the 1950's.
