Watanabe got her start in show business when she auditioned but didn't pass the audition for the 6th Annual Horipro Talent Scout Carvan in 1981, losing to Hori Chiemi. But she got her chance when she won the grand prix award for the Guerras Ninja contest and debuted as an actress.

She went to also start a brief singing career with the debut of the single, "Hana no Iro", in 1984.

In 1995, she briefly married baseball player Nishioka Hiroshi until they divorced in 1999.
