While & Matthews first met when they were both members of The Albion Band. When they left this group in 1997, they began performing as a duo, and after receiving positive feedback chose to continue as a duo; though they do occasionally break away and work with other artists. In 2009, they were winners in the 'Best Duo' category at the 'BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards', and have been nominated nine times in the 'Best Duo', 'Best Song', and 'Best Live Act' categories, since 2001.

Their songs have been covered by a number of artists, including: Mary Black, Barbara Dickson, Christine Collister, and Fairport Convention.
