In the first half of his musical career, Neal Burris was a country and western song writer, vocalist, and guitar player. He was known as the "Shuffling Cowboy", for the way he shuffled his feet while he sang and played his guitar on stage. His band was called "Neal Burris and His Melody Ramblers". He wrote and played guitar for other performers such as Pee Wee King, Billy Brown, White Mountain Bluegrass, and Porter Wagoner & the Wagonmasters. He co-wrote several songs for himself and other performers with his wife Ruby (Dunn) Burris. He appeared on several radio programs and stations in the late forties and early fifties. He also appeared on the "Grand Ole Opry" on 1 December, 1951 and the television show "Old American Barn Dance" in 1953. In the mid to late 1950's, Neal Burris contracted a throat infection which ended his career as a vocalist.
