Before Mason City came about, guitarist/vocalist Connor Matthews and bassist Josh King began playing together in 2007. In late summer 2010, they recruited lead vocalist/songwriter Eric Dylan Spaunhorst, and drummer Zach Guthrie. They began releasing music under the name Mason City in early September. Mason City welcomed its new guitarist Brennan Pittman in mid August 2011. The band ceased its activity in 2013.
