Born to free Blacks in Norfolk, Virginia, Holland was an American classical guitarist, music teacher, and activist for equal rights for African Americans.
He wrote 35 original pieces for guitar, and some 300 arrangements of other songs. Perhaps his most famous work was “Holland’s Comprehensive Method for Guitar” (1874), the first published American guitar method.
