The Backyard Band

Effective period / Period of releases: 2016 - 2019

Loud guitars, dynamic basses, banging kick drums and cutting harp sounds.
The music is too punky for the blues - and too bluesy for punk.
But despite this, punks and blues lovers join hippies, metalheads, indie/alternative disciples and other music enthusiasts in the audience at the band's concerts. So it does work.

The first official album SECOND HAND was released in 2016 on the indie label of Toten Hosen drummer Vom Ritchie. Since then, the band has been constantly touring clubs and festival stages in Germany and neighbouring countries, underpinning their now legendary reputation as a formidable live band. A highlight of this development was probably their performance at the WDR Rockpalast "Crossroads Festival" in Bonn in March 2018.

With the momentum from the live shows, the band holed up in the rehearsal room and recorded twelve songs for the new album. The result is called "DRY" and was released in 2019 as a vinyl LP, CD and digital album via Hinterhof Produktionen / Rough Trade. The release was followed by extensive touring activities, which were unfortunately brought to an abrupt halt in spring 2020 by the coronavirus pandemic.

In July 2024, the band from Cologne will release their third album "Shake It Up". Four long years have passed since the last longplayer DRY due to the pandemic, but the time has been used for some profound changes. Musically, the sound is as dirty and raw as ever - rock'n'roll and blues merge with a good dose of punk rock attitude to create a garage sound somewhere between Little Richard and The Sonics.
As always, the driving guitars and concise harmonica sounds stand out from the rock-solid foundation of drums and bass, with the powerful, snotty voice of singer Moritz Zergiebel towering above them.

On "Shake It Up", Zergiebel ventures into new territory lyrically. For the first time, he sings half of the album tracks in his native German and takes a critical stance on current political and social issues. His work as a trade unionist is also reflected in the subject matter, and a track like "Aufstand im Betrieb" can certainly be described as a modern working class anthem.

High-calibre musicians were invited as guests for the album.
DIE TOTEN HOSEN guitarist KUDDEL visited THE BACKYARD BAND in the studio and played on the songs "Haltet mal die Fresse" and "Amphetamin". His colleague ELF from SLIME contributed his guitar parts to the track "LKA". He is joined by TORBEN WESCHE (King Khan & His Shrines, among others) on saxophone for two other songs ("Don't Tell Mama" and "Shake It Up").

The first pre-release from the new album "Shake It Up" will be the single "Haltet mal die Fresse" on 31 May 2024. The content of the song is a statement against social brutalisation and anti-democratic structures in society. Musically, it is characterised by driving rock'n'roll beats and an angry punk rock attitude, the latter also contributed by the aforementioned support from Kuddel on guitar.

In spring / summer 2024, THE BACKYARD BAND will play numerous festival gigs and will play at the legendary RUHRPOTT RODEO Festival on the weekend of the album release (05 - 07.07.24) with the likes of BAD RELIGION, MILLENCOLIN and SUM 41. Further open air and club shows will round off the year.
