The Montclairs were formed by Arthur Perry, a native New Yorker, who began his musical journey in a church-sponsored drum and bugle corps at the age of eight. He studied drums under Dad Hines, father of the famous Gregory and Maurice Hines, until he was 15. At 16, Arthur Perry formed The Montclairs.
Living on Clifton Place in Brooklyn, Perry possibly named the group after the town of Montclair, New Jersey. The Montclairs made a significant impact by winning first prize at the Apollo Theater amateur contest. They went on to record for the Premium Record label, owned by Joe Leibowitz and located in Linden, New Jersey.
Arthur Perry has had a distinguished career, collaborating with renowned artists such as James Brown, Papa John Creach, Big Joe Turner, Jessica Williams, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Bobby Timmons. He also performed in a Public Television special with Rahsaan Roland Kirk on Channel 13, which has since become a TV jazz classic.
