German conductor. Chief conductor of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig from 1970 to 1996, principal conductor of The New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1991 to 2000, principal conductor of The London Philharmonic Orchestra from 2000 to 2007 and was music director at Orchestre National de France from 2002 to 2008.
Third wife was Tomoko Sakurai.
