Robby Roadsteamer

Real name: Rob Potylo

Originally the lead singer of the band the Sweatpant Boners, which was a metal/hard rock band formed with Ken Susi of Unearth and Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage. They released one album in 2001 titled "Cruisin' With The Masters". Potylo formed his own band in 2005 called Robby Roadsteamer with Dave Pino of Andrew WK and has toured the United States behind his album Postcards From the Den Of Failure, including the Warped Tour. The band came in second in the WBCN (FM) Rock & Roll Rumble. Roadsteamer received nationwide radio airplay and was featured on VH1's Best Week Ever for his single "I Put a Baby In You." The character he developed "Robby Roadsteamer" is part Tony Clifton, part pro wrestler; usually appearing onstage in a wig, fake mustache, and sunglasses. Roadsteamer was a disc jockey on WBCN until he was fired in early May 2008. Roadsteamer's band has been nominated for "Live Band of the Year" at the Boston Music Awards three times.

In the mid-2000s, comedian Rob Potylo’s character, Robby Roadsteamer, steamrolled Boston.
Shock jock/headbanger parody Roadsteamer took second in the 2005 ’BCN’s Rock ’n’ Roll Rumble, played East Coast dates on the Warped Tour and took home a Boston Music Award in 2006 — and when I say “took home,” I mean “stole” (yup, he nabbed a statue, took off running and was never caught).
But not everybody could handle hanging with the foul-mouthed, bad-behaved Roadsteamer. In fact, Potylo couldn’t handle Roadsteamer anymore.
“I came into the city with Robby and nobody knew the difference between me and the character,” Potylo said. “I wanted a chance to establish myself, my own personality in Boston so I dropped the act.”
Potylo sang funny, odd folk songs — including a very good one about Market Basket champion Arthur T. Demoulas. He started the ever-evolving TV and Web series “Quiet Desperation,” about the local arts scene. He continues to DJ on WEMF on weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m.
