Benson Simbeye

Benson Simbeye (1941 - 2000) was a Zambian musician and composer. Born in Zambia in 1941, he was a self taught guitar player. In the early 1960's he traveled in east Africa, eventually settling in Mombasa. There he became involved in the thriving local music scene and eventually met Nashil Pichen Kazembe and Peter Tsotsi. He joined Kazembe's Congo River Kids Band and in 1961, followed the band to Nairobi, Kenya where it eventually became The Equator Sound Band. Around 1974, he became an early artist on the Zambia Music Parlour label. He released a number of local Zambian hits in the 1970's and 80's with one of his songs championing the plight of the disabled. He was sadly killed in a mugging in near his home in Ndola in 2000.
