The group was founded in 1982 in Millstatt by Gottfried Würcher, Wilfried Wiederschwinger and Heinz Zwatz. Dietmar Zwischenberger and Rudi Schellander joined them by 1984.

In 1989 Edmund Wallensteiner replaced the bass guitarist Schellander.

Accordionist Heinz Zwatz left in 1999 and although the group grew to seven members with keyboardist Arnd Herröder and guitarist Markus Holzer and in 2005 with drummer Siegfried Willmann, the name quintet was retained.

At the beginning of 2016 Edmund Wallensteiner, Dietmar Zwischenberger and Arnd Herröder left the Nockalm Quintet to found the band Knicker Nocker together with Marco Diana. Kurt Strohmeier joined the Nockalm Quintet as the new keyboard player, so that the band with its five members is actually a quintet.

After the ex-trumpeter and drummer Zwischenberger could not be found for two weeks, he was found dead on October 27, 2016.
