Ward Wellman & The Kents, an instrumental group composed primarily of boys from the Westport area of Connecticut, created the sounds for "Written in the Sky", The record is a “very fine instrumental," according to Frank Delfino, program director of WICC. The boys, shown at a recording session, are, from MI, Mark Hinkley of Greenwich, piano; Mickey Mcllroy of Redding, guitar; Stuart Chamberlain of State College, Pennsylvania, organ; Leigh Copeland of Weston, lead guitar; and Ward Wellman of Westport, trumpet. Dave Kirkpatrick of Georgetown plays bass guitar with the sextet.
Three Westport area teenagers are members of an Instrumental group whose recording of "Written In the Sky" Is enjoying Increasing popularity the teenagers and disk Jockeys In a number of areas a-cross the country. "Ward Wellman and the Kents," whose leader lives in Westport, played their first professional engagements at teenage "fandango nights" at Longshore Club Park In the summer of 1962. All six members of the group had played at prep school before joining forces at the Arnold Copeland home In Weston. Wellman, Mark Hinkley of Greenwich, and Stuart Chamberlain of State College, Pennsylvania, had played as a group at the Kent School. Mickey Mcllroy of Redding played In his home town and at Salisbury Prep. Copeland had played in groups In Fairfield and at Suffield Academy. The boys shaped their own arrangements and style for their "fandango" appearances. They then played a series of engagements at a country club on Fisher's Island, New York, off New London, at the Weston Field Club and the skydivers’ event at Staples. Norman Simon of ASCAP In New York encouraged the band and signed them to a record contract with Gregell Music Productions, Inc. They cut eight sides In New York's Columbia Studios in late summer, four more last fall. Laurie Records, a leading record company for teenage music, bought "Written in the Sky", composed by Chamberlain, and "Pony Expresso." The record was released three weeks ago. "Written In the Sky" is being played in Detroit, Tulsa, Baltimore, Jacksonville, Albany, Hartford, and New Haven, as well as locally. All the boys, except for Kirkpatrick who Is still at Kent, are in college. Wellman and Hinkley are at Yale, Copeland at Colgate, Mcllroy at Columbia, and Chamberlain at Penn State. They get together for engagements on vacations and holidays.
