Van Gogh's Daughters is driven by two front women who both write, both sing and both play guitar. The music can be light or dark, charming or brutal, feminine or masculine. Jane Woodman and Paige Weber, the group's two singer-songwriter-guitarists, both grew up in the Midwest and both began playing guitar as an escape from the boredom. They drifted to San Francisco separately and were introduced to each other by a friend while spending some down time in the local jail. The pair continued to kick around together still playing in various local bands. It wasn't until the pair happened upon a kindred spirit in California native and drummer Jeanne Hangauer that things started to take off. The trio practiced together, playing the local clubs and bars and with the introduction of bassist Rachel Thoele, Van Gogh's Daughter really got rolling.
