Black Power Band

Members: Max Mwansa

Black Power Band was a Zambian kalindula band active during the 1980's. Members of the band included Victor Mwamba, Remond Chipung and Max Mwansa. The band was the resident band at Mwanga Mwendo Bar in the mid 1980s. Their hit song "Black Power Band - Imisango Yaba Chairman" attracted a court case from a local ward chairman offended by the complaints of abuse of power in the song. The case was dropped only because then Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda sang the first few lines from "Imisango Yaba Chairman" song during one of his meetings.

Following the recognition of Imisango Yaba Chairman by President Kaunda, the band received sponsorship from Lusaka City Council, replacing (Butungwa Star Band) in the position. Black Power Band's sponsorship was dropped after about a year because they failed to achieve further hits. The end of sponsorship from Lusaka District Council led to the demise of the Black Power Band. Arguments over ownership of equipment and song ownership eventually led to legal cases.
