Collier studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He was the leader of many of the great British orchestras including the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The London Symphony Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He was also Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy Of Music.

Father of violinist Suzie Collier; maternal grandfather of multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier.
