The quintet released their debut EP Patient Zero in 2012 , made a name for themselves in the South African metal scene and is now one of the top metal bands in South Africa. Her first album, Retrocide , was released in February 2015 and was highly regarded . In the same year, the band was awarded the South African Metal Music Award 2015 (Best Core) and the African Metal Award for outstanding performance and quality. Zombies Ate My Girlfriend also took part in the "Protest the Hero South African Tour" and played at the "Krank'd Up Music Festival 2015". The band is currently working on their second album, which is due for release in 2017.

In April 2016, Zombies Ate My Girlfriend won the Wacken Metal Battle South Africa from 39 participating bands and became South Africa's best young metal band. At the Metal Battle Final during the Wacken Open Air 2016, the band prevailed against the international competition of 28 participating bands and won 1st place.
