Renwick James, formally known as Ujamaa, was born on September 24, 1949 in Trinidad and Tobago. He started singing at the age of 10 in the choir of the Tunapuna Boys Rc School. In 1969 he joined the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and immediately became a member of the police choir. He resigned from police service in 1976.
