Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Trio

Members: Otomo Yoshihide, Yasuhiro Yoshigaki, Hiroaki Mizutani

Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Trio (ONJT) is a Japanese ensemble established by a composer, sound producer, turntablist and guitarist Otomo Yoshihide with two "core" members of his renowned New Jazz Quintet: bassist Hiroaki Mizutani and drummer Yasuhiro Yoshigaki. ONJT's only studio session happened in August 2010 at GOK Sound in Tokyo, recording several takes of Albert Ayler's "Bells" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman." Complete with Otomo's solo guitar versions and a few quintet takes with Sachiko M (sinewaves) and Jim O'Rourke (EMS synth), these studio jams came out in November 2010 on the Japanese label Doubtmusic.

In April 2015, the New Jazz Trio first performed live during Otomo's residency at John Zorn's The Stone in East Village, New York, where Yoshihide played with bassist Kato Hideki and Billy Martin of Medeski Martin & Wood fame on drums. The ONJT's "classic" line-up appeared at Doubtmusic's 10th-anniversary at Akihabara Club Goodman in Tokyo in October 2015, sharing the stage with Altered States, and returned in December during Otomo's "year-end" special at Shinjuku's Pit Inn. In April 2016, Otomo and Yoshigaki performed as a trio with Hiroshi Yamazaki (drums).
