Claus Ulrich

Effective period / Period of releases: 2017

He no longer wants to be the sidekick. Claus Ulrich has been a bass player with the best-known musicians around the world, but most of all in Germany. He played with Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder in a career that lasted for more than four decades. Now the 66-year old musician has switched to the guitar and proves that he is a first-class singer, too. His debut album „You Don’t Need To Speak At All“ will be released by the end of the month on the German label Last Rebel Records about 50 years after he took to music.

A short review: Born in the flatlands on the coast of the North Sea, Germany, where he picked up the double bass. He was classically trained before he got engagements with orchestras, jazz and rock bands, played at theaters and toured Europe extensively for decades.
Just a few years ago he put the double bass aside and picked up the guitar, for he was into canoeing and who would take a double bass into tiny boat ?All his life he was fascinated by the songs of Leonard Cohen, and James Taylor. They seem to connect him with his old spiritual home, Canada. Here he is, this almost unbearably humble musician, a member of the folk scene in Hamburg and beyond: “I never saw myself as a musical talent. I always had to practice over and over again what others just had right away.“
Some of the most talented jazz and folk musicians helped to put „You Don’t Need To Speak At All“ on the map. You could fill books with the who-is-who on these recordings, but more important, you can feel the friendship, joy and love everybody gave to this project and to the lovely man, brilliant guitarist and very emotional singer, Claus Ulrich.
This is just the beginning!
