Born on 5 ( January 18 ) 1900 in the village of Bor (now Shimsky district , Novgorod region ). Father is a glassblower, mother is from a poor peasant family. He worked as a timekeeper, then as an accountant on the railway. During the Civil War, he served as an ordinary Red Army soldier in a railway battalion. He studied singing at the 2nd Petrograd School of Music (Leningrad College) (1922-1928) under A. Ya. Porubinsky . In 1927-1928 he was an artist of the Leningrad Chapel choir . In 1928-1954 - soloist of LATOB named after S. M. Kirov , at the same time - LMATOB... In 1941-1945 he was the organizer of the blockade musical theater, headed the opera troupe. He possessed a light, mobile voice of a soft timbre, stage talent. Since 1942, every Sunday he sang Russian folk songs on the Leningrad radio. In early 1943, he turned down an offer to work at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. In 1953-1963 he taught at the Rimsky Korsakov State Conservatory . Member of the CPSU (b) since 1949 .
