Sir Shambling says that while Spearman was in the Navy in 1956 his ship docked in LA and he won a talent contest organized by the great Johnny Otis. Otis took him into the studio and, not knowing his real name, called him “Sailor Boy” on the couple of Dig 45s that he released.
