Jad Mroue (they/them, born Jan 21, 1992), known professionally as Funny Death, is a Lebanese musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, music video director and visual artist who grew up mostly in Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Lebanon, Switzerland and Japan, before immigrating to Canada. Their music incorporates elements of their different cultural backgrounds and varied styles including synthpop, dreampop, art pop, electronic and experimental pop. With their forcibly nomadic lifestyle, due to the 4 wars they fled before finally moving to Japan, where they stabilized, Jad’s music and visuals have inherently been virtual, with the help of in-bedroom-recorded vocals and low budget, self-directed music video collaborations. Their sources of influence range from the birth of PC Music during Tumblr’s prime time in 2013, 80’s synthpop with P2P's golden age in the early 2000’s, the more recent underground scenes in Tokyo and Vancouver, to the French post-colonial influence on their home countries, with the rise of acts such as Daft Punk, Air, Justice and the French Touch movement.
