Saschko Gawriloff

German violinist born in Leipzig in 1929. He first had lessons on the violin from his father, who played with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and later at the Leipzig then Berlin Conservatory. Between 1947 and 1966 he was Konzertmeister in a number of German orchestras. In 1959 he won the Paganini Competition in Genoa and since then has taught at Nurnberg, Detmold, Essen and eventually at the international summer courses for new music in Darmstadt. In 1982 he succeeded Max Rostal as professor of violin at the Cologne Musikhochschule.
