Real name: William Lamartine Thompson

American songwriter, music store owner and had an music and publishing company in Chicago, Illinois, born November 7, 1847 in East Liverpool, Ohio and died September 20, 1909 in New York.

Note: Jim Hendricks is sometimes credited for writing "Softly And Tenderly" since his 1971 recording of the song with different lyrics but same chorus (BMI database).
