Real name: John Francis Wade

English hymn-writer, born 1711, died 16 Au­gust 1786 in Douai, France, where he had fled after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Primarily known as the writer of "Adeste Fideles" (translated to "O Come, All Ye Faithful" by Frederick Oakeley in 1841).
