Alex Frame
Australian jazz trumpeter and clarinettist from Adelaide. Alexander John Frame (1929 - 1998) was born on April 4, 1929 in Newcastle, NSW, and the family moved to South Australia when he was very young. He discovered jazz during his early teens and took up trumpet prior to attending the third Australian Jazz Convention in Melbourne in 1948. He formed the South City Seven in 1949.then joined Leon Atkinson’s West Side Jazz Band and Bruce Gray's All-Star Jazzmen. He subsequently led the University Jazz Four.
Alex helped start the Adelaide Jazz Society and in 1957 was a founder member of the Black Eagle Jazz Band which appeared at the Adelaide Jazz Convention in 1957 and attended the 13th Convention in Sydney in 1958, where they recorded a Columbia LP. The Black Eagles changed their name to the St Vincent Jazz Band in 1959 and became one of Adelaide’s most popular bands. He went on to play in the Adelaide All Stars, Ken Way’s All Star Jazz Band
and played in many South Australian Jazz bands.
