Members Rob and Myles came up with the idea of forming Special Patrol during high school. In the inital stages of the band, they tried different band members and started to develop their craft.

In 1999, the band released Lead Pipe Dreams, their first LP. However, it wasn't until 2003 when they met bassist Damian Holland that Special Patrol really started to makes waves.
