Biography
Richey Hackett
It took many years for Richey Hackett to become comfortable with applying the term “musician” to himself, having never received any formal training in music and being from a family where his siblings were all far more musically talented. But his unconventional style of DIY musicianship proved to be perfectly suited to the art of recording. As such, Hackett’s music champions a lo-fi homemade aesthetic and heavily focuses on emotional resonance rather than technical showmanship.
Hackett was born on July 2nd, 1983, in the small town of Wordsley, England. He was raised in the neighbouring town of Kingswinford and grew up on a steady musical diet of rock, pop, heavy metal, punk and electronic/ambient music, all genres he has explored in his own recordings.
At the age of 15 he became ill with viral encephalitis and came very close to losing his life. This childhood trauma and his adult struggles with mental illness both heavily inform Hackett’s emotionally driven electronic and ambient rock style as he has used his music for both creative outlet and as self therapy.
The majority of his musical output has been released through the independent netlabel Vulpiano Records but Hackett now releases via Blue Rose Recordings, a label he started with fellow musician and friend Stu Johnson. The two also formed new wave alternative duo Us Frail Gods in 2020 and have since released two full length albums.
He currently lives in Birmingham with his wife and daughter.
