The Carter Brothers

Effective period / Period of releases: 1959 - 1980

Members: Duke Coleman, Roman Carter, Jerry Carter (3), Jimmy Carter (11), Al Carter (4)

The Carter Bros., Roman, Jerry, and Albert, along with friend Jimmy 'Magoo' Carter (Morris) formed a band in high school in Southern California from where they had relocated from Alabama. They first recorded in 1958 and had a hit record (minus Jimmy Carter), “Southern Country Boy,” on Jewel Records in 1965 which reached a placing of twenty one on Billboard’s R&B chart. A number of similar sounding 45's were subsequently recorded for the Jewel label but by the mid 1960s their recording career was in hiatus. They continued to play local clubs in the Los Angeles area and took day jobs. In 1996, they reappeared on a Japanese label with new recordings of their old Jewel material which resulted in successful tours abroad. They received home acclaim for their appearance at the 2007 San Francisco Blues Festival and became regulars on the club circuit with a show that combines their gospel influence with blues and R&B. Jerry died in 2002 and Albert in 2012.
