German symphony orchestra based in Wuppertal; founded in 1862 as the "Elberfelder Kapelle", from 1900 it actually performed under municipal administration by the city of Elberfeld. After the merger of Elberfeld and the neighbouring city of Barmen in 1929 to form the city of Wuppertal, the name became "Städtisches Orchester Wuppertal" (see Städtisches Orchester Wuppertal). Later (in the 1970s) converted into a tariff group A orchestra and renamed the "Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal" (Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra).
