Ernest Hill

American jazz bassist.

b. March 14, 1900 (Pittsburgh, PA, USA)
d. September 16, 1964 (New York City, NY, USA)

Worked with Claude Hopkins (1924-28) and, in the late '20s, Josephine Baker, LeRoy Smith (2), and Charlie Skeete. During the '30s he played Chick Webb, Benny Carter ('31, '33-'34), Willie Bryant ('35), Spike Hughes ('35), and Benny Carter ('35). Played again with Claude Hopkins sporadically ('41-44), Zutty Singleton & Louis Armstrong ('43), and Cliff Jackson ('44). Later worked with Bill Coleman (2), Frank "Big Boy" Goudie, and Happy Caldwell, and was a delegate for AFM, NYC.
