Russian conductor. Born 2 May 1953 in Moscow, Soviet Union.
He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory. His debut as a conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre came on 12 January 1978. In 1988, he was appointed Music Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, and, in 1996, he became its Artistic and General Director (leading the orchestra and opera and ballet companies). Principal conductor of Orchestra Of The Mariinsky Theatre (1988-present), Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest (1995-2008), The London Symphony Orchestra (2006 to 2015), Münchner Philharmoniker (2015 to 2022). He served as principal guest conductor of The Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra from 1997 to 2008. Contracts and positions terminated in March 2022 by Münchner Philharmoniker, Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala, and Wiener Philharmoniker.
Brother of Larissa Gergieva.
