AKA 'Harvie S'.

American jazz bassist, composer, and engineer. Harvie was born on December 06, 1948 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. As a child, he learned piano and did not begin playing bass until he was nineteen. He attended Berklee College of Music and established himself as a gigging bassist in the Boston scene. In 1972, he moved to New York City. He's worked with Al Cohn & Zoot Sims, Mose Allison, Jackie Paris, Thad Jones, Gil Evans, Lee Konitz, Barry Miles Silverlight, David Friedman, Steve Kuhn, Paul Motian and many others. Since 1980, he's also recorded as a leader. He adopted the moniker 'Harvie S' because people often misspelled his last name.

Note: there is a typo in Scott Yanow's AMG biography, as Harvie S does not use a period after the initial in place of his birth surname.
