Prof.dr. Maarten van Buuren is a professor of French language and literature at Utrecht University. He studied French and Dutch at the University of Groningen. In 1986 he obtained his PhD at the Institute for General Literature in Nijmegen on a dissertation on metaphor in Les Rougon-Macquart by Emile Zola. He specializes in literary theory and French literature from the 19th and 20th centuries. He is also an essayist, translator and author of various works, both fiction and non-fiction.
