Hendrikus Mengers

Real name: Hendrikus Mengers

Hendrikus Mengers, also known as Riekus Mengers and Hannes Mengers, was a Dutch accordeon player, known as the composer of the song Als De Klok Van Arnemuiden. Despite the song being about a church tower in a coastal town in the southern province Zeeland, Mengers lived in Sebaldeburen, in the northern province Groningen. Little is known about his life, other than he presumably wrote the melody for Als De Klok Van Arnemuiden shortly after World War II, approximately aged 35. Dico van der Meer wrote the now-familiar lyrics in 1948.
