His father Anthony and mother Lucia were Italian immigrants. Sannella was a multi-instrumentalist; according to John Chilton, he played violin, piano, organ, clarinet, alto saxophone, guitar (preferably steel guitar), banjo and vibraphone. Occasionally he also appeared as a singer.
