The Heavy Horses is the pseudonym under which Canadian musician Justin Mahoney writes and records songs about outlaws, angels, and murder.The debut album Murder Ballads & Other Love Songs was released in 2012 and was subsequently nominated for Country Recording of the Year at the 2013 East Coast Music Awards and Folk Artist of the Year at the 2013 Music NL Awards.
In 2018 Blizzard Entertainment featured the song Pale Rider, from the debut album, in an animated short for the award winning video game Overwatch.
The sophomore album With Darkness In My Eyes was released in late 2019. The album was recorded and produced by Laurence Currie and includes performances by Christine Bougie (Bahamas, Sarah Slean), Robbie Crowell (Midland, Kesha), Mark McIntyre (Terri Clark, Dean Brody), Brad Kilpatrick (Hawksley Workman), and other Canadian artists, as well as a guest appearance by "#1 Harmonica Player" Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard).
