Smokey Joe

Real name: Joseph Brodie

Effective period / Period of releases: 1993 - 2021

Breakbeat, Hardcore / Drum n Bass, Jungle producer / remixer and DJ from North London, UK. Co-founder of Smokers Inc alongside his brother Tobi Brodie.

Smokey Joe began his career in sound engineering, moving on to work in radio where he produced and hosted the award winning friday night dance show on Wear FM. Joe began producing in 1992, and with the track “Wha' Dat (Gimmie My Gun)” he first made his name in the scene.

In 1993 he signed to Labello Blanco Recordings, where he recorded the classics “A Special Request (Remixes)” (later remixed by Andy C) and “Shining”, as well as producing tracks for Micky Finn and Dr. S. Gachet.

After producing several tracks for the label's Jungle Massive compilation series, Joe parted from Labello in 1995. He went on to produce Prizna's album for PWL and Rampage's album for Almo Sounds before hooking up with Unity Records, producing the first 5 singles on their newly formed label.

Around the same time, working with his brother, Joe set up No Smoking Records, and went on to produce 12 of the 15 releases on the label, as well as remixing tracks for Moving Shadow, Ganja Records, Suburban Base and Kickin' Records.

Smokey Joe still releases material nowadays but not as much as he did in the 90s era.
