It's when you take something apart that you can see the beauty of the individual pieces, says Said Deep. It makes sense that the Durham, NC based producer gravitated towards sample-based production as his palette. A lifelong love of record shops and an insatiable appetite for musical discovery provided Said Deep with a wellspring of raw materials to start producing. "You have to love the music first and foremost. You have to hone your ability to hear the thing that nobody else hears on a record and then wield the vision of how you can use it to build," he says. "When I first heard records like DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' and The Avalanches 'Since I Left You,' it was an immediate connection with how they melded and molded those lost and found sounds into new and exciting landscapes," he says. Recording sessions are spent in sprints of sonic exploration and texture-building across an unsorted sea of records and tapes in Said Deep's studio. In his world, there is no quarter for genre, era, or any of the traditional tropes of music classification. "For a record to work, I just need to know that it caught my ear and feels like the missing piece I wanted but didn't know I needed. The thrill of it all is just grabbing a pile of records and letting kismet do its thing."
