Biography

Roberts Zommers
Singer and Opera Orchestra Artist.
Robert Sommers was a singer and violinist in one person. He studied singing with Paul Sax, in the mid-20s he began his career as an opera soloist in our National Opera.
In the review after an evening of songs, it is stated that as a tenor Robert Sommers is nothing outstanding, but the audience apparently liked his performances, because there were flowers in their laps. Elsewhere it is written again that Sommers is a lyrical, polished tenor, with great flexibility and freshness of voice. The singer felt best in songs with a lyrical, even sad mood. He staged the songs of Scarlatti, Donizetti, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Liszt, our own Emīl Dārziņš and Arvīd Žilinski. Those who praised the singer's performance were probably more right, because Robert Sommers joined the band of radiophone soloists and also performed in concerts together with the radiophone orchestra.
The press also read the news that in 1937 the freelance artist Roberts Sommers married Zenta Lazdiņa.
After World War II, Robert Sommers can still be seen in the staff of the LPSR Opera and Ballet Theater soloists. On the other hand, it is noted in the radio database that Robert Sommer's life ended in 1984 - I have no information about what happened in the tenor's life during the Soviet era. However, during Latvia's first independent state, the singer and violinist of the Riga Radiophone, Robert Zommers, was a frequent participant in concerts, as well as in the Belakord factory, he sang many records - among them were folk songs and Oskar Strok's compositions, sonorous tangos, Don José's flower aria from the opera Carmen, as well as Edgar Straume's composed waltzes.
