She started acting when she was 18 at the theatre of the Spanish writer and poet Frederico Garcia Lorca. She was a dramatic stage actress and cabaret singer in France from the early 1950's, singing a mixture of modern songs and Montmartre classics. She was awarded the Légion d'Honneur; she was also a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres and was three times awarded the Grand Prix du Disque.
