Hiski Salomaa was born in Finland but after his mother died in 1909, he moved to the U.S. He made his living as a tailor, but he was also a popular performer among the Finnish immigrants.

His recordings are an important part of Finnish recording history because they were released at a time when there were very few Finnish records released.
