Paul Douliez

Flemish composer, pianist, conductor and author (Hasselt, April 4, 1905 - Stuttgart, January 13, 1989). Between 1931 and 1943 pianist and conductor with the Institut national belge de radiodiffusion and during the German occupation Zender Brussel. In 1943 he joined the Waffen-SS and left for the Eastern front; in the following year he returned to Belgium and became director of Zender Brussel. He rejoined the Waffen-SS after the occupation and was made prisoner by the Soviets. During his imprisonment he was active as conductor in Kyzyl-Kyya. After his return to Belgium he was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment (having earlier been condemned to death) but released after one year. He moved to Germany, becoming head of the record department of a publishing company and still enjoying a successful career with the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Orchester Der Städtischen Oper Berlin.
