Founding member of the Directors' Guild Of Great Britain. He was knighted in the New Year's Honours for 2002/2003. In 2005 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University Of Sunderland.
Music underpinned many of the movies he directed, from his debut Bugsy Malone (1976) to Fame (1980), Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982), The Commitments (1991) and Evita (1996).
