Rooted in Etoile De Dakar.

When the group Etoile De Dakar disbanded in 1981, its two lead singers, Youssou N'Dour and El Hadji Faye parted ways and went on to form their own respective band. Youssou N'Dour created Super Etoile de Dakar and El Hadji Faye created Etoile 2000.

The Super Etoile de Dakar, albeit with the passing/rotation/departure of a few musicians, has remained Youssou N'Dour's backing band ever since.
