Hugarian-born American violinist and songwriter and orchestra leader who had his first success in the early days of radio broadcasting. Born: September 10, 1904 (or 1906) in Budapest, Hungary Died: April 16, 1997 Miami, Florida.His musical career spanned 60-some years. He wrote more than 80 songs, including "Play Fiddle Play" and "When a Gypsy Makes His Violin Cry", which became his theme song. He came to the United States with his family when he was 8 and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music. Music director of CBS from 1929 to 1940.
