Gerardo Gombau was a Spanish composer, pianist and conductor, born in Salamanca Aug. 3 1906, died in Madrid Dec. 13, 1971. He founded the Symphonic Orchestra of Salamanca in 1942, as well as New Music in Madrid (1958). His musical works evolved from a conservative nationalism to a system approach to serial and electronic music. Gerardo Gombau also performed as a pianist and conductor, and participated in the creation of the Spanish Contemporary Music Publishing (EMEC). He also composed the soundtrack to Spanish documentaries and some movies up until his untimely death in 1971, aged 65.
